Protecting Journalists in Gaza Is a Moral and Humanitarian Duty International Union of Journalists and Writers

At the heart of the ongoing tragedy in Gaza, the word has fallen — martyred before it could reach the world.
230 Palestinian journalists have been killed so far by Israeli occupation forces. Some were targeted and killed along with their entire families in their homes — simply because they chose to be a voice for truth in a time of death and deafening silence.

What is happening is not “collateral damage” or “random targeting” — it is a systematic crime aimed at silencing the truth and erasing the image.
The pen has become an enemy. The camera — a target.
With every fallen journalist, the world loses a window into the greatest humanitarian catastrophe of our time.

And yet, those who remain continue to march forward — without protection, without guarantees, armed only with conscience and their unshakable belief that telling the truth is a duty that does not die, even in death.

In this context, the International Union of Journalists and Writers calls for urgent protection for journalists, media professionals, and digital influencers in Gaza.
These individuals represent the first line of defense for truth — delivering images and stories no one else can provide under siege and constant bombardment.

“Protecting journalists and digital voices is no longer an option — it is an urgent necessity to prevent the extermination of truth.”

The Union emphasizes the following priorities:

  • Providing safety gear and both material and moral support for journalists and content creators.

  • Ensuring international legal protection through UN mechanisms.

  • Launching independent international investigations into the targeting of journalists, and holding perpetrators accountable.

The continued targeting of journalists is a flagrant violation of international humanitarian law and the Geneva Conventions, which guarantee the protection of media personnel in conflict zones.
And yet, the international silence persists — while the lives of truth-tellers are extinguished.

We are not only calling for condemnation of these crimes, but for real action:

  • Immediate international protection for journalists and digital voices in Gaza.

  • Full support for their field needs and humanitarian requirements.

  • Global amplification of their voices, free from censorship or distortion.

Let the voice of journalism unite across borders with one clear message:

“When a journalist is killed, the truth is killed.
When we remain silent, we become complicit witnesses to the massacre.”

Let us renew our commitment:
Protect journalism. Protect the truth.
